Getting started

This page brings together the path from installing the official launcher to creating your first character and starting to explore Britannia. Follow the steps from top to bottom, then use the references at the end to continue.

1. How to connect

Official launcher

Access to the server must be done through the official DoB Launcher. Download the package for your system, open the launcher, and follow the instructions presented.

On Linux, the launcher requires CrossOver or Wine. This preview version was tested only with CrossOver; Wine compatibility has not yet been validated by the team.

Installing on macOS

Preview for Apple Silicon

This version requires a Mac with Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4, or later), CrossOver installed, and an internet connection. There is no package for Intel-based Macs.

After downloading the .zip file:

  1. Extract the package and drag Days of Britannia to the Applications folder.
  2. Try to open the application.
  3. If macOS blocks it, open System Settings → Privacy & Security.
  4. Scroll to Security and click Open Anyway.
  5. Confirm your password and click Open.

This confirmation is required only on the first launch. After that, open the launcher normally from the Applications folder.

There is no need to manually configure a client or enter connection details. To avoid incompatible files, keep the launcher updated and always use the official link.

Account

Enter an unused username and password. The account is created automatically, with a limit of up to 5 accounts per IP. The server allows a maximum of two simultaneous external connections via the same address.

Never share your password. The team does not need it for support.

2. Your first character

Starting location

Every player starts near the Britain bank, on the Felucca map.

Stats

  • 100 STR
  • 100 DEX
  • 100 INT

The permanent limit is 100 per stat and 300 total. Buffs and items can raise each effective stat up to 120.

Starting skills at 100.0

New characters start with these eight core skills at 100.0:

  • Swords
  • Tactics
  • Archery
  • Healing
  • Magery
  • Meditation
  • Focus
  • Resisting Spells

Profession-specific skills are still assigned separately. Existing characters keep their saved values; this change never lowers existing skills.

The shard does not have a global skill cap. Each individual skill remains capped at 100.0.

Equipment and resources

Legacy profession or skill items such as weapons, tools, reagents, bandages, and profession books are no longer given at creation. The DoB kit and the starting resources below remain available.

The character starts with:

  • Complete Spellbook.
  • Empty Runebook.
  • Shrunken horse.
  • 10,000 gold, only for the first eligible character by IP.
  • An ordinary, lootable Starter PvP Iron kit with Regular armor, weapons, a Black Staff, and supplies. It includes no jewelry or potion bag.
  • 15 normal Heal Potions directly in the backpack.

The Starter kit and 15 Heal Potions are ordinary items and may be lost as loot. The Spellbook, Runebook, horse, and starting gold remain bound to the receiving character. Starter gold can pay for NPC purchases, does not become account gold, and cannot fund Player Vendors.

See CHARACTER for buffs, caps, and race, and Items for classic gear.

3. Your first hour in Britannia

You begin near the Britain bank on the Felucca map. You do not need to do everything at once: first organize your resources, follow the introductory Achievements path, and then choose whether you want to explore PvM, prepare for PvP, or develop other skills.

1. Get to know your backpack

Open your Paperdoll and main backpack. A new character receives a complete Spellbook, an empty Runebook, a shrunken horse, starting resources, and the Starter PvP Iron kit.

  • Keep the Hunter's Compendium directly in the main backpack and double-click it to open.
  • Store gold and items you do not plan to carry in the bank.
  • Read weapon, armor, and jewelry properties before equipping them.
  • Double-click the shrunken horse while in a location where mounts are allowed.

2. Understand Britain and Nujelm

Britain is the starting location, but Nujelm is the server's Safe Haven. The defined region blocks player conflict, stealing, harmful actions by pets or summons, magical travel, Fields, and received damage.

Use Felucca's public moongate network to travel to Nujelm. In 0.40.0, no character gains skills inside Safe Haven, including Newcomers.

Learn about Nujelm Safe Haven before leaving for a hunt. Ocllo remains an unguarded Felucca city, but it is no longer the shard's safe point.

3. Follow the introductory Achievements

Before investing in a build, open .achievements and follow the path introduced by the game. The eight introductory stages are sequential:

  • First Hunt: defeat 10 Undead creatures.
  • Troll Hunter: after the first stage, defeat 10 Humanoid creatures.
  • Scaled Hunter: after the second stage, defeat 10 Reptilian creatures.
  • Scorpion Hunter: after the third stage, defeat 10 eligible Scorpions.
  • Earth Elemental Hunter: after the fourth stage, defeat 10 eligible Earth Elementals.
  • Harpy Hunter: after the fifth stage, defeat 10 eligible Harpies.
  • Orc Hunter: after the sixth stage, defeat 10 eligible Orcs.
  • Ettin Hunter: after the seventh stage, defeat 10 eligible Ettins.

The hints point to Britain Cemetery, Despise Trolls, Despise Lizardmen, Desert of Compassion, Shame, Covetous, Orc Cave, and Despise, but other eligible locations also count. Each stage grants PvM Mastery XP and gold; see Achievements for the specific rewards.

4. Choose a first playstyle

  • Melee: choose Swords, Fencing, or Mace Fighting and compare one- and two-handed weapons.
  • Archer: carry a Bow and arrows; remain still briefly to release the shot.
  • Mage: organize reagents, the Spellbook, and mana before leaving.
  • Bard: Musicianship supports Peacemaking, Discordance, and Provocation; these skills are not part of the initial 100.0 set.
  • PvP: use the Starter PvP Iron kit to begin or .arena for a controlled fight.

See the weapon catalog, combat rules, and PvM Mastery before investing in your chosen style.

5. Take your first hunt

Outside the Safe Haven, look for a creature suited to your equipment and observe its Threat Rating. Trivial and Common are better starting references than facing high-class creatures without preparation.

When you participate in an eligible PvM kill with looting rights and remain near the encounter, you may receive PvM Mastery XP. Open corpses before they disappear: Scrolls of Knowledge and other items remain subject to the normal loot lifetime.

If you discover a Mastery, open the Hunter's Compendium to understand its effect, distribute available points, and decide whether it belongs in the active build.

6. Prepare to die and return

Deaths outside the Arena use the Death and recovery system. The character may return immediately without recovering what remained on the corpse, wait for belongings to be recovered, or wait for help.

Newcomer characters follow their own automatic return. Read Newcomer and protection before leaving a safe area.

7. Useful commands

  • .patchnotes: shows the current version and changes.
  • .arena: opens challenges against players or training with the PvP Trainer.
  • .pvp: opens potion notice and cooldown preferences.
  • .skillcheck: separates success from gain, explains non-training or saturated attempts, and displays protected progress.
  • .help: shows help for the available commands.

After advancing through the introductory path, choose one small objective: discover a Mastery, test two weapons, visit Nujelm or Ocllo, or complete a training fight.
